新規に就任したIGBP-LOICZ(陸地-海洋:沿岸域における陸域−海域相互作用研究計画、1月11日記事参照)で、6月15〜19日にDahlemタイプのワークショップが開かれます。

Please would you send me:
1) a reference / pdf of the BEST paper you have read (but not co-authored) on coastal sustainability published in the past 3 years (max).
2) the BEST paper that you havet co-authored on coastal sustainability published in the past 3 years
(Journal of Oceanography, Vol. 62, pp. 551 to 558, 2006)」という趣旨の自著だけ推薦しました。

Dear all,

I am a new member under the struggle with catching up your stimulating discussion.

It seems many aspects are already introduced. So I attached my work concerning the chemicals and ecosystem sustainability.

There is an estuarine lagoon (area 82 km2) yielding over 10,000 tons of commercial clam per year in Japan. Nutrients removal through fisheries of the clam prevents eutrophication there, so it seems very sustainable. But I found that the lagoon had been covered by submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) till the start of using herbicides 50 years ago. After the loss of SAV, phytoplankton increased (using the nutrients that had been used by SAV) and then clam that feeds on phytoplankton increased. Then fishermen increased and they are keeping the constant population of clams for their sustainable fisheries for these 20 years.

What is the sustainable condition for coastal ecosystem?
Can we show it with the evidence gathered only for 10 years to 50 years?

Masumi

Dear Masumi-

Thanks very much for this contribution. One of the things we must be clear about is that good management cannot happen without good science, and I think this is a great example of good coastal research, and a very interesting contribution.

Best regards
