最近はオンラインジャーナルで所属機関のサイトからかなりの論文をPDFでダウンロードできるようになりました。コピーする時間も省けるし、随分便利になったものです。
それでもダウンロードできない論文が必要になったら、著者に別刷請求をしましょう。
文章はなるべく簡潔に。例えば私はこんな感じで出しています。
Dear Dr. XXX,
I should be most grateful if you could send me a PDF file of your following paper.

以下、英語版の署名
Title:とSource:はWeb of Scienceの記録をそのままコピペするだけ。
別刷請求すると、思わぬ情報を教えてもらえたりします。たとえば、下記はアナモックスに関する別刷をお願いしたら、他の論文を教えてくれた例です。別刷請求したLimnology and Oceanographyは図書室にはあるのですが、コピーだと整理が大変なので、最近はコピーできる論文もPDFをお願いすることにしています。

論文が届いたら、こういうご親切がなくても、一言何か書きましょう。自分の研究の売り込みにもなります。どうせ完璧な英語が書けるわけじゃないから、文法など気にせず、内容が面白い一言を考えましょう。
