所属するアメリカの学会から本日0:54付で下記の段落で始まるメールが届きました。全体はこの6倍の長文です。
トランプ政権はかねてより環境分野の予算を削減すると言ってましたが、具体的にアメリカ環境保護局（EPA)が36％、米国地質調査所（USGS）が15％などと、信じがたい削減率です。この削減額を人件費に反映させるわけにはいかないでしょうから、必然的に研究予算がこの割合近くで減ってしまうことになると思われます。
環境保護局や地質調査所の研究はトランプ政権を支持しているとされる貧しい白人層の健康（例えば化学物質汚染）や生活（例えば地盤沈下）に関わる問題も含まれていて、予算削減は彼らにとってもマイナスだと思われます。この削減にトランプ政権支持層が反発しないとしたら、何をやっているのか国民に宣伝する努力を増やす必要がありそうです。

The Trump Administration released their proposed budget for FY2018 this week, proposing steep cuts to science across federal agencies, including at the EPA (36%), USGS (15%), NOAA (12%) and NSF (11%). The President’s budget request for FY2018 is disappointing and short-sighted and would be devastating to the aquatic sciences in the USA if implemented. Our message here is particularly aimed at ASLO’s USA membership but we remind all that ASLO stands ready to advocate on behalf of science funding and integrity in any country in which it comes under threat like this.
